Summer 2013 Episode Rankings

After giving it some thought, I arrived at the same conclusion that I did over the last few seasons - this will be the final Summer episode rankings post. While over half of what I'm watching will be airing for a 13th week, I feel that losing five series from the usual lineup is enough to justify ending it here. That, and next week will overlap with the start of the new season, so I'll probably be otherwise occupied.

As ever, if anyone wants to know my final thoughts on any of the series that are going on for 13 episodes, feel free to ask in the comments and I'll get back to you when I've finished them.

ENDING:

FREE! ranks highest of all the final episodes, which I certainly wouldn't have predicted last week! On the one hand, Free! had less of a plot to wrap up than most of its competition. It was a fairly predictable, happy ending, with the boys deciding that simply having fun swimming together is more important than anything else. On the other hand, it was about the only ending that really satisfied me (this week - can't fault either). The pacing was perfect, it didn't feel rushed, and there was a decent amount of closure. A good end to an enjoyable series.

GATCHAMAN CROWDS comes second in terms of endings, but the gap is bigger than the one rank difference would suggest. I liked everything that I saw in the episode, and the overall message that anyone can be a hero (with the help of a social media app that grants super powers ?), but felt a lot was left out. Once Berg-Katze was defeated, it ended very abruptly. A lot of the sadder parts were just brushed over - did OD die? What effect did that have on poor Utsutsu? I suppose Jou and Pai-Pai's closure was covered in episode 11, but even so it felt weird that they didn't even show their faces in the finale. So yeah, I'm conflicted on this one, but my thoughts on the series as a whole remain positive.

They've certainly earned mine.

Episode 12 of KAMISAMA NO INAI NICHIYOUBI made for a great ending to the Class 3-4 arc itself, and I didn't expect the plot twist at allbut Alice being alive at the end with no explanation did feel like a bit of a cop-out. As an ending to the series as a whole, though, I felt disappointed. The early episodes, focusing on the relationships between the living and the dead, were fascinating, and the gravediggers were also intriguing. Then the Goran Academy arc happenedand the less said about that, the better. While the series did recover after that arc, the focus had shifted to Alice and Dee and their problems, and I found them less interesting.

KIMI NO IRU MACHI's ending wasn't rushed, and I felt it resolved pretty much everything there was left to resolveit was just a bit underwhelming. Most of the drama took place in the first half of the series, and all that was left to do this week was for Haruto to split up with Asuka now that he had been caught cheating on her. As I predicted in Week 9, it was a happy ending for pretty much everybody except her, and since she was one of the only characters left that I liked at this point, there wasn't much to like about this episode.

THE HORROR!

NOT ENDING, BUT AWESOME:

This week's SPACE BROTHERS was spectacular. The first half was one of Mutta's coolest moments, first doing a vertical climb roll to impress Director Butler and improve his chances of going to the moon, and then drawing a heart in the sky to win Serika's love. A perfect plan, killing two big birds with one flashy stone. What could possibly go wrong? Well, everything, unfortunately, but that's what made it so funny. The second half focused on Sharon's illness, which unfortunately is progressing quickly, but on the positive side, so is her life's work and dream of getting the lunar telescope built.

As ever, I'm glad Space Bros. will continue to be in my lineup for another season.
